Diameter and pitch together determine how much air the blade moves at a given speed, rotation must suit the motor and the intended airflow direction, and wing count affects both airflow and the sound the fan produces.
A four-wing blade moves more air than a three-wing blade of the same diameter and pitch, at the cost of higher motor load. Substituting a four-wing blade for a three-wing one to increase airflow will increase motor current and may overload the motor, which is why blade substitution is not a legitimate way to address a performance complaint.
