The Yellow Jacket 93844 is a ball valve adapter providing positive shut off at a service hose connection.

The vacuum decay test is the single most useful application of a ball valve on a hose, and it is worth setting out why. Evacuation removes air and moisture from a system. A vacuum gauge connected during evacuation shows the pressure the pump is currently maintaining, but that reading does not by itself confirm the system is dry and leak free, because a running pump can hold a respectable vacuum against a small leak or against moisture that is still boiling off.

Closing a valve to isolate the pump while leaving the gauge connected removes the pump from the equation. The vacuum then either holds, which indicates a tight and dry system, or it rises.

The pattern of the rise is diagnostic. A vacuum that climbs steadily without limit indicates a leak drawing air in. A vacuum that rises and then levels off at a stable value indicates moisture remaining in the system, boiling off until it reaches equilibrium.
