DiversiTech Fitting & Clean Brush 7/8"OD B-998

The DiversiTech B-998 is a combined fitting and cleaning brush sized for 7/8 inch outside diameter tubing, used to prepare copper tube and fittings before brazing or soldering.

Joint preparation determines joint quality more than any other single factor. A brazed or soldered joint depends on capillary action drawing filler metal into the gap between tube and fitting, and capillary action only works on clean metal. Copper oxidises in air, and the thin oxide layer that forms on stored tube and fittings prevents the filler from wetting the surface. The result is a joint that appears complete on the outside while the filler has failed to penetrate the socket.

Such joints frequently pass an initial pressure test and fail weeks or months later under vibration and thermal cycling, which places them among the more expensive failures a contractor encounters because the system is then charged and commissioned.

A fitting brush cleans the internal socket surface, and the tube brush cleans the external surface of the tube end. Both must be cleaned, since a joint is only as good as its poorer half.

Brush immediately before assembly rather than in advance, as freshly cleaned copper begins oxidising again straight away. Avoid touching cleaned surfaces, since skin oils interfere with wetting.

This tool is sized for 7/8 inch OD tube. Confirm the size against the tubing in use, and replace brushes as the bristles wear.
