Yellow Jacket Access Valve Gauge Boots 2-Pack

The Yellow Jacket 49090 is a two pack of gauge boots, protective covers fitted to manifold gauges to guard against impact damage.

A manifold gauge set is a measuring instrument that spends its working life in a service vehicle, on rooftops, and in mechanical rooms. The analogue gauges at its heart contain a bourdon tube and a geared movement, both of which are sensitive to shock, and both of which lose accuracy when the gauge is dropped.

The failure is rarely dramatic. A dropped gauge usually still works. Its needle still moves, its face is still readable, and nothing about it suggests a problem. What has changed is calibration, and a gauge reading a few pounds high or low produces charging errors on every system it is subsequently used on.

An undercharged or overcharged system does not fail immediately. It runs at reduced efficiency, subjects the compressor to conditions outside its design envelope, and shortens equipment life in ways the customer attributes to the equipment rather than the service.

Gauge boots absorb impact and reduce the incidence of this. They are inexpensive relative to the instrument they protect and to the callbacks that inaccurate readings generate.

Checking gauges against a known reference periodically, and zeroing them at atmospheric pressure, confirms they remain trustworthy.
