The Yellow Jacket 93842 is a three pack of ball valve adapters used to add positive shut off at service hose connections.

A ball valve at the hose end changes how a connection is broken. Without one, disconnecting a hose under pressure vents its entire contents to atmosphere. With one, the valve is closed first, the refrigerant remains captured in the hose, and only the small volume downstream of the valve is released.

Across a working day this is a measurable quantity of refrigerant retained rather than lost, which matters on cost grounds and increasingly on regulatory grounds as refrigerant handling requirements tighten.

The benefit during evacuation is different. A ball valve at the connection allows the vacuum pump to be isolated from the system while the gauge remains connected, which is precisely what a proper vacuum decay test requires. Isolating the pump and observing whether the vacuum holds distinguishes between a system that is genuinely dry and tight and one where the pump is simply outpacing a leak or ongoing moisture boil off.

Without that isolation, the gauge reading only shows what the pump is achieving at that moment and proves very little.
