The Uniweld UAB Aluma-Braze is an all in one aluminium brazing product for repairing and joining aluminium components.

Aluminium repair arises regularly in this trade, most often on evaporator and condenser coils where the fins and in some equipment the tubing are aluminium.

Aluminium tubing has become more common as manufacturers have moved away from copper on cost grounds, and it has changed what a coil leak repair involves. Copper tube repairs are routine for any technician with brazing skills. Aluminium repairs require different filler, different flux, and considerably more care with heat control.

The practical question on a leaking aluminium coil is often whether repair is appropriate at all. A coil that has failed from formicary corrosion, which attacks aluminium and copper alike in the presence of certain airborne contaminants, will typically have multiple developing failures rather than one, and repairing the leak that was found does not address the others.

Where the leak is from a discrete mechanical cause, repair is more likely to hold.

The judgement is worth putting to the customer honestly, since a repair that fails within months costs more overall than replacement would have.

Confirm the product suits the aluminium alloy involved, clean the surfaces mechanically immediately before brazing, control heat carefully given the narrow working window, remove flux residue thoroughly, and pressure test the repair before recharging.
