Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 0620F1 is a copper phosphorus brazing alloy supplied in rod form for joining copper tubing.
Copper phosphorus alloys, designated in the BCuP family, are the standard filler for copper to copper joints in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Their defining property is that they are self fluxing on copper. The phosphorus content reduces the copper oxide at the joint surface during heating, so no separate flux is required for a copper to copper connection. That is a significant practical advantage, removing a step and eliminating the flux residue that would otherwise need cleaning off.
The limitation attached to that property is absolute and must be understood. Phosphorus bearing alloys must never be used on ferrous metals. Phosphorus reacts with iron to form brittle iron phosphides at the joint interface, producing a connection that appears sound and fails without warning under stress or vibration.
They are also unsuitable for copper nickel alloys above a low nickel content.
For joints involving steel, brass, or dissimilar metals, a silver brazing alloy with an appropriate flux is required instead.
Joint preparation still matters. Self fluxing does not mean self cleaning, and the surfaces must be abraded to bright metal before assembly.
Confirm the alloy's composition and suitability for the metals being joined, purge with nitrogen during brazing, and clean both mating surfaces immediately before assembly.
