Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 98000 is a 45 percent silver brazing alloy supplied in a one troy ounce quantity.
High silver alloys in the BAg family differ fundamentally from copper phosphorus alloys, and the difference governs where each is used.
BAg alloys contain no phosphorus. That means they are not self fluxing, and a separate flux is always required regardless of the metals being joined. It also means they can be used on ferrous metals, since the iron phosphide problem does not arise.
This is what makes them the correct choice for joints involving steel, brass, dissimilar metals, and any combination where a copper phosphorus alloy would be unsuitable.
Their working properties are excellent. A 45 percent silver alloy has a low melting range, flows very freely, produces a ductile joint, and fills gaps well.
The cost is correspondingly high, which is why they are sold in small quantities by weight and reserved for joints that require them.
Flux selection matters as much as alloy selection. The flux must suit the alloy's melting range and the metals involved, and it must be applied to both surfaces before heating.
Flux residue must be removed after brazing, since most brazing fluxes are corrosive and residue left on the joint will attack it.
Confirm the alloy and flux suit the metals being joined, apply flux to both surfaces, and clean residue thoroughly afterward.
