Product Highlights
Description
The Harris D620F1 is a 6 percent silver Sil-Phos brazing alloy for copper tubing applications.
Six percent silver grades occupy a middle position in the copper phosphorus family, offering improved flow and ductility over 5 percent alloys without the cost of 15 percent grades.
For much routine refrigeration work this represents a sensible balance, and many contractors standardise on a grade in this range for general use, reserving higher silver alloys for demanding joints.
Standardising on one alloy has practical benefits beyond cost. Technicians develop a feel for how a particular alloy behaves, recognising the temperature at which it flows and the appearance of a properly made joint. Switching between alloys with different melting ranges means relearning that feel, and joints made during the transition are more likely to be overheated or underheated.
Overheating is the more common error and the more damaging. An overheated copper phosphorus joint has its phosphorus burned out, the filler becomes sluggish, and the copper itself can be damaged. The joint may still look acceptable.
Recognising the correct temperature comes from watching the filler rather than the flame, and heating the base metal so the filler melts on contact with the joint rather than in the flame.
Confirm the alloy suits the metals being joined, purge with nitrogen, clean both surfaces, and avoid overheating.
