Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 5620F1 Stay-Silv is a 5 percent silver copper phosphorus brazing alloy for copper to copper joints.
Five percent silver grades are the workhorse of refrigeration brazing, chosen where the joint conditions are straightforward and cost matters.
Compared with higher silver grades, a 5 percent alloy has a higher melting range, requiring more heat into the joint, and is less ductile and less free flowing. It fills wide gaps less readily.
Those differences are manageable when the fit up is good and the technique is sound. On a properly prepared joint with correct clearance between tube and fitting, a 5 percent alloy produces an entirely sound connection at a fraction of the cost of higher silver grades.
Where it is less suitable is on joints with poor fit up, on assemblies where minimising heat input matters, and in applications subject to severe vibration where ductility is at a premium.
Joint clearance deserves emphasis with lower silver alloys. Brazing depends on capillary action drawing filler into the gap, and that action works within a range of clearances. Too tight and filler cannot enter; too wide and capillary action fails, leaving voids.
The prohibition on ferrous metals applies as it does to all phosphorus bearing alloys.
Confirm the alloy suits the metals and the joint conditions, purge with nitrogen, clean both surfaces to bright metal, and control fit up.
