Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 95120 Handyflo is a 6 percent silver brazing alloy for copper joints.
Free flowing characteristics are worth understanding because they affect how a joint should be made.
An alloy that flows freely penetrates a joint readily by capillary action and fills the full depth of the socket with less heat and less time. That is generally desirable, and it forgives some imperfection in fit up.
The corresponding characteristic is that free flowing alloys run. On a vertical joint, or one where the filler is applied at the top, a very free flowing alloy can run through and out of the bottom of the socket rather than remaining in it. Controlling this requires the heat to be applied so that the coolest part of the joint draws the filler where it is wanted, since molten filler flows toward the hotter region.
Less free flowing alloys stay where they are put but require more heat and more time to penetrate the joint fully.
Joint orientation is therefore worth considering when selecting an alloy for a particular installation, and overhead and vertical joints benefit from technique adjustment rather than simply more filler.
Excess filler on the outside of a joint indicates the filler did not go where intended, not that the joint is well made.
Confirm the alloy suits the metals and joint orientation, purge with nitrogen, and clean both surfaces before assembly.
