Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 95060 Sil-Fos is a 5 percent silver copper phosphorus brazing alloy.
Sil-Fos is a long established trade name for copper phosphorus brazing alloys, and the name is used loosely across the industry to refer to phosphorus bearing filler generally.
That loose usage occasionally causes problems, because it obscures the specific composition being discussed. A technician asked to use Sil-Fos may reach for whatever phosphorus bearing rod is available, which may have a different silver content and different working properties from what was intended.
Referring to the specific alloy designation, or at least to the silver percentage, removes the ambiguity.
The property shared across the family is self fluxing behaviour on copper to copper joints, which is why the alloys became standard in refrigeration work.
The prohibition shared across the family is equally important. No phosphorus bearing alloy may be used on ferrous metal, because phosphorus and iron form brittle phosphides at the interface. The joint appears complete and fails under vibration or stress without warning.
Joints involving steel or brass require a silver brazing alloy with appropriate flux.
Confirm the specific alloy composition and its suitability for the metals being joined rather than relying on a trade name, purge with nitrogen during brazing, clean both surfaces to bright metal immediately before assembly, and control joint clearance.
