Lucas-Milhaupt Silvabraze Brazing Alloy Tube

The Lucas-Milhaupt 31418 Silvabraze is a silver bearing brazing alloy supplied in tube form for refrigeration joints.

Making a sound brazed joint depends on a sequence, and most joint failures trace to one of its steps.

Fit up comes first. Capillary action draws filler into the gap between tube and fitting, and it works within a clearance range. Too tight and the filler cannot enter; too wide and capillary action does not occur, leaving a joint filled only at the mouth.

Cleaning comes second. Both surfaces must be abraded to bright metal immediately before assembly, and not handled afterward, since skin oils interfere with wetting.

Purging comes third. Nitrogen flowing through the tube during heating prevents internal oxide scale.

Heating comes fourth, and the technique is to heat the base metal rather than the filler. The joint is brought to temperature evenly, working around it, and the filler is touched to the joint. If the joint is at temperature the filler melts on contact and is drawn in by capillary action. If the filler has to be melted in the flame, the joint is too cold.

Cooling comes last, and the joint must not be moved or quenched until the filler has solidified.
