The Harris SB861 is a one pound package of 6 percent silver brazing alloy for refrigeration and air conditioning joints.

Brazing alloy is purchased by weight, and package size is a stocking decision worth thinking about.

Silver bearing alloys are expensive, and a pound of a high silver grade represents a meaningful sum. Buying in quantity reduces the cost per rod, but only if the material is used within a reasonable period.

Storage affects usability. Brazing rods should be kept dry and clean. Rods that have corroded, become contaminated with oil, or been handled with dirty hands introduce that contamination into the joint, and surface contamination on a filler rod interferes with wetting exactly as it does on the base metal.

Rods stored loose in a vehicle become bent, contaminated, and mixed with other alloys, which is the practical problem. Mixed alloys of different compositions are difficult to distinguish visually, and using the wrong one on a ferrous joint produces a connection that fails.

Keeping alloys separated and identified, ideally in the original packaging or a labelled tube, prevents this.

Offcuts are worth keeping since short lengths remain usable, but they should be kept with their own alloy.
