The Lucas-Milhaupt 98002 is a 45 percent silver brazing alloy supplied in a five troy ounce quantity.

Silver brazing alloys are sold by troy ounce because of their silver content, and the pricing follows silver as a commodity.

That has a practical consequence: the cost of these alloys is not fixed, and stocking decisions are affected by it. Buying a larger quantity commits capital, and it makes sense only where the alloy is used often enough to turn over.

For most refrigeration contractors, high silver BAg alloys are used occasionally rather than routinely, on joints involving steel or brass where a copper phosphorus alloy cannot be used. A modest quantity kept in stock covers that need.

The alloy's value also makes storage and handling worth attention. Rods should be kept in their packaging, clean and dry, and offcuts retained since short lengths remain usable.

Contamination is a genuine concern with any brazing filler. A rod handled with oily hands, or stored loose alongside other materials, carries that contamination into the joint where it interferes with wetting.

Keeping different alloys clearly separated and identified matters particularly here, since using a high silver BAg alloy where a cheaper copper phosphorus alloy would serve is wasteful, and the reverse is unsafe.

Confirm the alloy and flux suit the metals being joined, and remove flux residue thoroughly after brazing.
