Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 15620F1 Stay-Silv is a 15 percent silver copper phosphorus brazing alloy for copper joints.
Silver content in a copper phosphorus alloy affects several properties at once, and understanding the relationship helps in selecting between grades.
Increasing silver lowers the melting range, which means the joint reaches flow temperature sooner and less heat is put into the surrounding material. On thin wall tubing and near components sensitive to heat, that is a real advantage.
Higher silver also produces a more ductile deposit. Ductility matters in refrigeration because joints are subject to vibration from the compressor and to thermal cycling, and a brittle joint fails by cracking under that repeated stress.
The alloy also flows more freely and fills wider gaps more reliably, which forgives imperfect fit up.
At 15 percent silver this is among the higher silver grades in the copper phosphorus family, and it is chosen where joint reliability justifies the cost or where the fit up and conditions are demanding.
The cost is the trade off. Silver is expensive, and a 15 percent alloy costs considerably more per pound than a 5 percent grade.
The prohibition on ferrous metals applies to all phosphorus bearing alloys regardless of silver content.
Confirm the alloy suits the metals being joined, purge with nitrogen during brazing, clean both surfaces to bright metal, and control fit up clearance.
