Tweco TWE1540-1146 Gas Diffuser Weldskill 1.714 Inch

The Tweco TWE1540-1146 is a Weldskill gas diffuser, 1.714 inch tip length.

The gas diffuser is the least visible consumable in a MIG gun and it does more than its name suggests.

Its first job is gas. Shielding gas arrives from the gun in a stream, and a stream is not shielding — it needs to become an even, symmetrical flow around the wire. The diffuser's ports distribute it. Get that wrong and the gas comes out lopsided, one side of the puddle is shielded and the other is not, and the result is porosity on one edge of every weld.

Its second job is electrical, and this is the one people miss. The diffuser is in the current path between the gun and the contact tip. That connection has to be tight and clean, and when it is not the resistance produces heat exactly where heat is worst. A loose or corroded diffuser overheats the tip, and burnback follows — the wire fusing itself into the tip, mid-weld.

So a diffuser that looks fine and is loose causes problems that get blamed on the tip, the wire, and the welder.

It is a consumable. Spatter blocks the ports, and blocked ports are porosity.
