Product Highlights
Description
The Tempil MRK28049 is a Tempilstik temperature indicator, 371°C / 700°F, 10 per case.
The obvious question about a temperature crayon is why anyone uses one when infrared thermometers exist, and the answer is worth knowing.
An infrared thermometer reads emitted radiation and converts it to a temperature using an assumed emissivity. Steel's emissivity varies enormously with surface condition — bright ground steel, mill scale, and oxidised surfaces all read differently, and a hot weld area contains all three within a few inches. Point an IR gun at shiny steel and it will read badly low, confidently.
A Tempilstik does not care. It is a physical phase change at a calibrated temperature, on the surface itself. It melts or it does not.
That is why welding procedures specify temperature indicating crayons: they are traceable, they are unaffected by surface condition, and an inspector can see the result.
At 700°F this is a high preheat, which puts it on heavy sections, high-carbon and alloy steels, and some post-weld operations.
Two technique rules: mark ahead of the heat rather than on already-hot metal, and keep the residue out of the groove — it is an inclusion waiting to happen.
Applications include welding preheat, interpass control, and heat treatment.
