The Dykem DYM80000 is ITW Dykem Steel Blue layout fluid in an aerosol, supplied in a 12 oz size, blue.

Layout fluid is one of the oldest tricks in a machine shop and it still has no better replacement. The problem it solves: scribing an accurate line onto bare steel produces a scratch that is nearly invisible against a bright metal surface, particularly under shop lighting and particularly to eyes that have been reading a drawing all morning. Layout fluid coats the work in an opaque film. The scribe cuts through it, exposing bright metal underneath, and the line appears as a brilliant thin streak against a dark background. It is instantly readable and it stays readable while the part is machined.

Steel Blue is the original and remains the standard colour. That is worth stating plainly — a machinist knows what a blued part means at a glance, and the colour has become shop shorthand rather than a preference.

The aerosol format lays down a thin, even coat quickly and reaches surfaces that a brush would struggle with. Coverage should be thin: a heavy coat takes longer to dry and can chip rather than cut cleanly under the scribe.
