Welding procedures specify a preheat — a temperature the steel must reach before welding starts. Many also specify an interpass maximum: a temperature the steel must not exceed between passes. Both matter, and they matter for opposite reasons.

Preheat prevents cracking by slowing the cooling rate. Interpass maximum prevents the opposite problem: too much accumulated heat coarsens the grain structure and degrades toughness, and on some alloys it damages corrosion resistance. A welder running pass after pass on a hot joint can walk the temperature well past the ceiling without noticing, because the joint feels the same.

A Tempilstik checks a ceiling exactly as it checks a floor: if the mark melts, you are over. Stop and let it cool.
