The Tempil MRK28043 is a Tempilstik temperature indicator, 260°C / 500°F, 10 per case.

The technique for using one of these is worth spelling out, because using it wrong produces a confident wrong answer.

Mark ahead of the heat, not on it. The correct method is to apply the stick to a cool or warming area of the workpiece and watch for the mark to melt as the heat arrives. Rubbing the crayon onto metal that is already at temperature melts it on contact regardless — which tells you the metal is at or above the rating and nothing more. Welders in a hurry do this constantly and record a preheat they never verified.

The second rule: keep it out of the weld groove. Tempilstik residue is a foreign material, and foreign material in a joint is an inclusion. Mark adjacent to the area, not in it.

At 500°F this is in the preheat range for heavier sections, higher-carbon steels, and some alloy steels.

The reason any of this is done: preheat slows the cooling rate through the heat affected zone, which prevents the hard martensitic structure that combines with welding hydrogen to produce delayed cracking. Those cracks appear after the job is signed off.

The 10 per case quantity is shop packaging.
