A spark lighter is the correct and only tool for lighting an oxy-fuel torch, and understanding why is worth thirty seconds.

The alternative is a match or a lighter, and it is dangerous in a specific way. Lighting a torch means putting an ignition source into a stream of fuel gas at the tip — and an oxy-fuel mixture ignites explosively rather than catching gently. A hand holding a match is in exactly the wrong place. Burned fingers from this are one of the most common and most avoidable injuries in a welding shop.

A striker holds the flint at a distance and directs the spark into the gas stream while the hand stays out of it. That is the whole design.

The SHOOT-A-LITE format differs from the conventional cup striker: it is a pistol-type lighter operated with one hand, which matters when the other hand is holding a torch.

Five renewals are included, which is the right thing to note — flints are the consumable, and a striker with a worn flint is the direct cause of somebody reaching for a lighter.
