Flange Wizard FLW28439

The Flange Wizard FLW28439 is a magnetic circle layout and burning guide, a circle layout tool with a sliding soapstone holder and a 360° scale on the magnetic base. It cuts circles up to 30 inches in diameter.

This tool does two jobs that fabricators normally do with two tools and a lot of arithmetic. As a layout instrument, the sliding soapstone holder scribes a circle of any radius up to 15 inches from centre — a compass for steel plate. As a burning guide, the same arm carries a torch around the same arc, so the circle that was marked is the circle that gets cut.

The magnetic base is what makes both possible. A compass needs a fixed centre point, and on a steel plate there is nothing to put a point into without punching one. A magnet holds the centre without marking the work, and releases without leaving anything behind.

The 360° scale on the base is the detail worth noticing. It lets the operator set and read an angular position, so the tool marks not just circles but points and arcs at defined angles around a centre — bolt hole patterns, radial layouts, and segment divisions.

Soapstone is the traditional marking medium in a hot shop because it survives the heat that destroys chalk and marker.

Applications include plate layout, hole and circle burning, flange and bolt patterns, tank and vessel work, and structural fabrication.
