Gloss white is the highest-reflectance finish available and in an industrial building that is a functional property rather than a decorative one.

Plant lighting is expensive and plant interiors are dark. A great deal of the light in any space is light that has bounced — off walls, off ceilings, off structure — and every one of those surfaces either returns it or absorbs it. A dark interior absorbs the light it was just paid to produce.

Painting structure, machine housings, and enclosures gloss white returns it instead. The effect is genuinely large, and it is the cheapest lighting improvement available: no fixtures, no wiring, no energy.

It also makes things visible. A leak, a crack, a loose fitting, or spilled oil shows immediately against white and hides against grey — which is why food, pharmaceutical, and clean operations are white, and why machine interiors are frequently painted white for inspection.
