Flat grey is the most quietly useful colour in an industrial paint range and it is the one nobody talks about.

Its virtue is that it disappears. Grey is the default colour of machinery, structure, and equipment, and a flat sheen hides the surface underneath it — the weld marks, the castings, the repairs, the sanding. Together that makes flat grey the finish for anything that should look like part of the machine rather than like a repair.

That is the actual maintenance problem. A touched-up patch that catches the light differently from the surrounding surface is more visible than the damage it covered, which is why gloss touch-up so often looks worse than leaving it. A flat finish blends.

Flat grey is also close enough to primer that it serves as a serviceable finish on structure that will never be looked at closely — brackets, frames, backing, and the inside of things.

The trade: flat films are softer and more porous. They hold dirt and they burnish when rubbed. For anything handled, the gloss versions in this range are correct.

Enamel cures by oxidation over days. The 20 minute figure is dry-to-touch.
