Flat black is one of the few finishes chosen for a genuinely optical reason rather than an aesthetic one.

A flat black surface absorbs light and reflects almost nothing. That is a functional requirement in a surprising number of places: the inside of an enclosure, a camera or optical housing, a light shield, a background behind an inspection station, a surface near a sensor that must not throw a reflection. Anywhere a stray reflection causes a problem, flat black solves it.

It is also the standard for anything that should visually disappear — structure behind a display, brackets, backing panels.

The trade-offs are real and worth stating. Flat films are softer and more porous than gloss, which means they hold dirt and they mark. A flat black surface that gets handled shows fingerprints and shine where it has been rubbed, and it cannot be cleaned back — wiping it burnishes it.

So flat black is for surfaces that are looked at and not touched. The semi-gloss and gloss blacks in this range exist for the ones that are.

Enamel cures by oxidation over days. The 20 minute figure is dry-to-touch.
