This range carries three blacks — semi-gloss, flat, and gloss — under separate part numbers, and the sheen is the whole difference between them.

Semi-gloss is the deliberate middle and it is usually the right answer, which is why manufacturers finish so much equipment in it.

The reasoning: gloss films are hard, washable, and resistant to marking, and they show every imperfection underneath because reflected light reveals shape. Flat films hide imperfections and are softer, more porous, and hold dirt. Neither is what a working machine wants.
