Flat is the specification and it is the third red in this range — alongside Safety Red and Bright Red — distinguished by sheen rather than by colour.

Flat is the least understood finish because it looks like the cheap option. It is not. Sheen is a physical property of the film: gloss films are tightly packed and hard, and flat films contain flatting agents that break up the surface so light scatters instead of reflecting. That makes flat films softer, more porous, and more inclined to hold dirt.

What flat buys is concealment. A flat film hides what is underneath it — dents, weld marks, filler, sanding scratches, imperfect surfaces. Gloss reveals every one of them, because reflected light shows shape.

And it buys the absence of glare. A flat surface in a workspace does not throw light back at anybody, which matters on anything near a work area or a light source.

So the choice is honest: flat for a surface that needs to look uniform and not shine, gloss for a surface that gets touched and cleaned.

Enamel is the resin, curing by oxidation over days. The 20 minute figure is dry-to-touch.
