Safety red is the most consequential colour in the scheme and the one with the least tolerance for approximation.

Under the safety colour conventions that OSHA codifies, red designates fire protection equipment and apparatus, danger, and emergency stop devices. Extinguishers, hose cabinets, sprinkler valves, and the stop button that shuts a machine down when something has gone wrong.

Every one of those is found under conditions that destroy careful reading. Smoke. Panic. A machine doing something it should not. Nobody reads a label in that moment — they look for red, and their hand goes to it.

Which is why the colour must be exact and reserved. A facility that uses a bright red for decoration and a safety red for the stop buttons has two reds and an ambiguity, at the moment when ambiguity costs most.
