Rust-Oleum RSO316544 Coating 3800 High Performance 5 gal Safety Orange Gloss

The Rust-Oleum RSO316544 is a 3800 high performance coating, acrylic enamel, water base, 5 gal, safety orange, gloss, 15 minute dry time, temperature range 50°F to 100°F, relative humidity under 95%.

The stated application conditions are the specification most people ignore and then regret, and they are the reason this listing is more useful than most.

Waterborne coatings cure by water evaporating out of the film. Everything about that is environmental. Below about 50°F the water does not leave properly and the polymer particles never coalesce into a continuous film — the coating dries to something that looks fine and has a fraction of its strength, and it fails months later. Above 95 percent relative humidity, the air cannot accept the water and the film stays soft.

Those are not guidelines. They are the chemistry, and painting a plant exterior on a cold damp morning produces a coating that has already failed and will not show it for a season.

Safety orange is a specified colour. Under safety colour conventions, orange designates dangerous parts of machinery — the guarded, energised, and moving parts exposed when a guard is removed. It only communicates if it is the same orange everywhere.

Water base means low odour and water cleanup, which is why it suits occupied facilities.

The 15 minute dry time is to touch.

Applications include machinery, plant equipment, and safety marking.
