Semi-gloss is the specification and sheen is a more consequential choice than colour, though nobody treats it that way.

Sheen is how much light the cured film reflects specularly, and it correlates directly with how tightly packed and how hard the film's surface is. That means sheen is not a look — it is a property. Gloss films are the hardest, the most washable, and the most resistant to marking. Flat films are softer, more porous, and they hold dirt.

The trade running the other way is that gloss shows everything underneath it. A gloss coat over a surface with dents, sanding marks, or filler telegraphs every one of them, because reflected light reveals shape. A flat coat hides them.

Semi-gloss sits in the middle deliberately: most of the cleanability of gloss, most of the forgiveness of flat.
