Description
The Robertshaw 41-429N is a silicon nitride hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating appliances.
Storage and transport are worth a note for ignitors of any type, since a meaningful proportion of failures occur before the part is ever energised.
Ignitors are supplied in packaging designed to protect the element, and they should remain in it until the moment of installation. An ignitor carried loose in a tool bag or a van drawer will eventually be knocked, and while nitride elements tolerate this far better than silicon carbide, neither benefits from it.
Damage is not always visible. A hairline crack in a silicon carbide element may not be apparent to inspection and will present as an ignitor that fails shortly after installation, which then appears to be a defective part rather than a handling failure.
Checking resistance before fitting, and again after fitting but before energising, confirms the element is intact and takes moments.
The same care applies during installation itself: routing the leads clear of the burner and sharp edges, and securing the bracket without forcing the element against anything.
Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces and heating appliances.
