Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 10-760 is a hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating equipment.
A hot surface ignitor replaces the standing pilot and the spark ignitor with a resistance element that glows incandescent when energised, igniting the gas directly as it leaves the burner. The furnace control energises the ignitor, allows it a warm-up period to reach temperature, then opens the gas valve.
The advantage over a standing pilot is energy: a pilot burns continuously through the year, whereas a hot surface ignitor draws power only during the ignition sequence.
The disadvantage is that the element is a consumable. Each ignition cycle takes the element through a large temperature excursion, and thermal cycling eventually causes it to fail. An ignitor is therefore among the more commonly replaced furnace components, and its life is measured in ignition cycles rather than years.
That relationship matters diagnostically: a furnace short cycling for any reason will consume ignitors rapidly, and repeated ignitor failure on the same appliance usually points to an underlying cycling problem rather than a defective part.
Ignitors are fragile and must not be handled by the element or knocked against anything during installation.
Applications include residential and commercial gas furnaces, boilers, and heating appliances.
