Robertshaw Ignitor Hot Surface 41-409

The Robertshaw 41-409 is a hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating appliances.

Voltage supplied to the ignitor is a factor in its life that is easy to overlook. Silicon carbide ignitors of the traditional type operate at line voltage, and their life is sensitive to the voltage they actually receive. Supplied above their rating, they run hotter than intended and fail sooner.

Where a building's supply voltage runs consistently high, ignitors on appliances in that building will have shorter lives than the same ignitors elsewhere, and the pattern presents as a furnace that seems to eat ignitors. Measuring the actual supply voltage at the appliance is the check that identifies this.

Some ignitor failures are also traceable to the control board, where a failing relay or triac supplies the ignitor incorrectly.

Where ignitor life on a particular appliance is genuinely poor and short cycling has been excluded, considering the supply voltage and the control's output is the next step.

Silicon nitride ignitors, where a compatible option exists, tolerate these conditions considerably better and are worth considering on problem installations.

Handle by the base only and protect from mechanical shock.
