Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 41-402 is a hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating appliances.
Silicon carbide hot surface ignitors, the traditional type, are notably fragile. The element is a thin ceramic component, and it breaks readily from mechanical shock, from being knocked against the burner assembly during installation, or simply from being dropped.
They are also sensitive to contamination. Handling the element with bare fingers deposits skin oils, which carbonise at operating temperature and create localised hot spots that shorten the ignitor's life considerably. Handling by the ceramic base or the bracket, never the element, is the correct practice.
Testing an ignitor is straightforward. With power isolated, measure resistance across its terminals. A serviceable silicon carbide ignitor typically reads somewhere in the tens of ohms; an open circuit reading indicates a cracked or broken element. A visual check will often show a visible crack, though hairline fractures may not be apparent.
An ignitor that glows but fails to light the burner is generally not an ignitor fault. Gas supply, valve operation, and burner condition are the things to examine.
Confirm the replacement matches the original in mounting bracket, element position, and electrical characteristics.
Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces and heating appliances.
