Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 41-428N is a silicon nitride hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating equipment.
Nitride ignitors change the maintenance conversation slightly. Because silicon carbide elements have a relatively predictable and limited life, proactive replacement during annual service is a defensible practice on older equipment. Nitride elements last long enough that routine preventive replacement is harder to justify.
What replaces it is inspection and observation. The ignition sequence should be watched during service: the element should glow uniformly, the burner should light promptly and smoothly, and there should be no repeated attempts. An appliance that has begun to light late, or occasionally requires a second try, is showing an ignitor approaching its limit regardless of the element material.
The other thing worth checking on any appliance with a history of ignitor failures is whether short cycling is occurring, since ignitor life is consumed by ignition cycles rather than running hours. A system cycling frequently because of an oversized appliance, a poorly located thermostat, or restricted airflow will consume ignitors of any material.
Handle the element by its base and confirm the bracket positions it correctly relative to the burner.
Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces, boilers, and heating appliances.
