Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 41-406 is a hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating appliances.
Ignitor position relative to the burner is critical and is set by the mounting bracket. The element must sit within the gas stream at the correct distance from the burner port, close enough to ignite the gas promptly and far enough that the flame does not impinge directly on the element and destroy it.
This is why ignitors are supplied with specific brackets and why the bracket geometry is part of the part number rather than an incidental detail. Fitting an ignitor whose element sits in the wrong position produces either delayed ignition, which causes a rough or noisy light-off and can produce a small gas accumulation before it lights, or an ignitor that fails within weeks from flame impingement.
Delayed ignition is worth recognising by sound. A furnace that lights with a distinct thump or bang rather than a smooth whoosh is igniting a small accumulation of gas, and the cause is often ignitor position, burner condition, or gas pressure.
When fitting a replacement, compare the element position against the original before securing the bracket.
Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces, boilers, and heating appliances.
