Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 41-408 is a hot surface ignitor for gas fired heating equipment.
Ignitors fail in a pattern that is worth recognising, because it offers warning before a no-heat call.
Early in life the element reaches ignition temperature quickly and lights the burner promptly. As it ages, its resistance changes and it heats more slowly, so ignition occurs later in the warm-up period. Eventually it no longer reaches temperature within the control's timing, and the furnace attempts ignition, fails to prove flame, retries, and locks out.
This means a furnace that has begun to light late, or that occasionally requires a second attempt before running, is showing an ignitor approaching the end of its life. Replacing it at that point, particularly during a pre-season service visit, avoids the failure occurring on the coldest night of the year, which is statistically when it will.
For that reason, ignitor replacement during annual maintenance on furnaces of significant age is a defensible practice rather than unnecessary parts changing.
The element must be handled by its base only, never touched on the element itself, and protected from mechanical shock during fitting.
Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces and heating appliances.
