The PolarPad POLAR3636-3GY is an equipment pad measuring 36 by 36 by 3 inches in grey, sized for larger condensing units and heat pumps.

A 36 inch square pad accommodates four and five ton residential equipment and the larger cabinets found on high efficiency models, where increased coil surface area has enlarged the footprint relative to older equipment of the same nominal capacity. On a changeout, measuring the new unit rather than assuming it matches the old avoids the frequent discovery on site that the existing pad is undersized.

Base rails overhanging the pad edge are the specific problem to avoid. They concentrate load at the edge, which causes the pad to tip or the soil beneath to consolidate locally, and the unit progressively goes out of level. Compressor oil return depends on the unit sitting level, and on a heat pump an out of level unit also directs defrost condensate incorrectly, producing ice accumulation in freezing conditions.

Ground preparation is the determining factor for whether level is maintained. Excavate to firm subgrade, bed on compacted gravel across the full pad area rather than supporting the corners, and check level in both directions after the equipment is set and bearing its weight.

Elevation above grade keeps the coil clear of standing water, snow, mulch, and vegetation.
