Osborn OSB99084R Stringer Bead Knot Wire Wheel

The Osborn OSB99084R is a stringer bead knot wire wheel, 6 inch outside diameter, .020 inch steel wire, 5/8-11 NC arbor hole, clamshell packaged.

The stringer bead geometry is what separates this from the cups in this range, and the difference is where the energy goes.

A cup brush spreads its wire across a broad face — it covers ground. A stringer bead wheel packs its knots into a narrow band roughly the width of a weld bead, and drives the whole tool's energy into that band.

For multi-pass welding that is not cosmetic. Interpass cleaning determines whether the next pass fuses properly or traps slag and produces an inclusion — a defect inside the joint that shows on the radiograph after everything is welded out. A cup brush cannot reach into a groove to do it. A stringer bead wheel goes in.

At 6 inches, the speed rating deserves attention: rim speed rises with diameter, so a 6 inch wheel must be turned slower than a 4-1/2 inch one. Check the wheel's rating against the grinder's no-load speed. Knot wheels fail by throwing wire.

The .020 inch wire is the heavy gauge, and knot construction means rigid bundles that strike rather than sweep.

Steel wire means carbon steel only — stainless needs a stainless brush.
