The DeWalt DEWDW49253 is an XP carbon cable twist wire wheel, 4 inch diameter with a 5/8"-11 arbor and .020 inch wire.

Cable twist is the construction that defines this wheel and it sits at the aggressive end of wire brushing. In a cable twist wheel the wire is twisted into cable-like strands and those strands are themselves formed into knots — a double twist that produces exceptionally rigid, dense bundles. The result behaves less like a brush and more like a rotating impact tool. Where a crimped wheel sweeps and a standard knot wheel strikes, a cable twist wheel hammers.

That aggression is the point. It is the specification for heavy mill scale, thick rust, weld slag, and stubborn coatings that lighter wheels merely polish. It is also the reason to be deliberate about the material underneath: a wheel this aggressive will mark and gouge softer or thinner work.

At 4 inches the diameter is compact and controllable, suiting focused work rather than broad coverage.

The .020 inch carbon steel wire is the heavy-duty general gauge. Note the carbon steel construction — this wheel must be kept away from stainless, where embedded carbon particles cause rust spotting later.

The 5/8"-11 arbor fits standard right angle grinders.

Applications include heavy scale and rust removal, weld and slag cleanup, coating stripping, and surface preparation in fabrication, shipyards, and structural steel.
