The Nidec/Emerson 1860 is a 1/4 horsepower, 1075 RPM, 230 volt single-speed condenser fan motor for outdoor condensing unit applications.

Quarter horsepower is the most widely used condenser fan motor size in North American residential air conditioning, covering the majority of two to three and a half ton condensing units. That volume makes it the first condenser fan motor a service contractor stocks.

Condenser fan motors fail predominantly from bearing wear and from moisture ingress rather than from winding faults. A motor that has become noisy, that turns roughly by hand, or that shows shaft play in any direction has reached the end of its bearing life and will fail shortly regardless of whether it is still running. Where a technician finds a motor in that condition during maintenance, replacing it before failure is far cheaper than the emergency call that follows.

The motor requires a permanently connected run capacitor of the specified value, and the capacitor should be measured whenever the motor is replaced.
