Nidec/Emerson Condenser Fan Motor 1/3 HP 1075 RPM 230V 2-Speed

The Nidec/Emerson 5462 is a 1/3 horsepower, 1075 RPM, 230 volt two-speed condenser fan motor for outdoor fan applications in condensing units with staged or head-pressure-controlled fan operation.

A two-speed outdoor fan motor exists to manage condensing pressure rather than to save energy. In low ambient conditions, a fan running at full speed can drive condensing pressure below the level the metering device needs to feed the evaporator properly, which starves the coil and can cause liquid to return to the compressor. Dropping the fan to low speed raises condensing pressure back into range.

The same arrangement appears on two-stage equipment, where the outdoor fan runs at reduced speed during first-stage operation to match the reduced heat rejection required, and on heat pumps during defrost transitions.

Because of this, the speed control wiring must be reproduced exactly at replacement. A two-speed motor wired for single-speed operation removes the low-ambient protection the manufacturer designed in, and the resulting fault appears only in cool weather.

The motor requires a permanently connected run capacitor of the specified value.
