Markal MRK96101 Silver-Streak Welders Pencils Specialty Markers

The Markal MRK96101 is a Silver-Streak welder's pencil specialty marker, silver, 12 per dozen and 6 dozen per case.

Note that this is the pencil format of Silver-Streak — the same marking material as the round marker elsewhere in this range, in a pencil body. The difference is practical rather than chemical: a pencil sharpens to a point and marks a fine line, where a round marker lays a broader stroke. Layout work that has to be cut to needs the fine line; a mark that has to be seen from ten feet needs the broad one.

Silver is the colour for dark steel. Welders work on scaled, rusty, and shadowed surfaces, frequently under a hood, and a bright metallic line is what remains readable there. Soapstone is the traditional alternative and it rubs off in handling — which happens between marking and cutting, every time.

The specification the data does not carry, and which decides whether this can be used at all on some jobs: chloride content. Markers used on austenitic stainless must be low-chloride or chloride-free, because chlorides on heated stainless cause stress corrosion cracking. That failure appears in service, long after inspection. Verify certification before selling into stainless fabrication.

The formulation survives heat that would burn a pen mark away.
