Silver-Streak is a welder's marker and the reason it exists is a visibility problem that soapstone does not solve well.

Welders mark on steel, and steel is dark. A soapstone mark shows adequately in good light and disappears in a fabrication shop, under a hood, or on rusty plate. Worse, soapstone is soft — the mark rubs off in handling, which is exactly what happens between marking and cutting.

A silver marker lays down a bright metallic line that reads on dark steel and survives being touched. Under a welding hood, that distinction is the difference between following a line and guessing at one.

The specification that matters and that this data does not state: chloride content. Markers used on austenitic stainless steel must be low-chloride or chloride-free, because chlorides left on stainless and then heated cause stress corrosion cracking — a failure that appears later, in service, in a joint that passed every test. Fabricators working stainless order certified low-chloride markers specifically.

The high-temperature capability lets the mark survive heat that would burn off a pen mark.
