Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 98110 is a flux coated 50 percent silver brazing alloy rod.
At 50 percent silver this is among the higher silver BAg alloys, with a correspondingly low melting range and excellent flow characteristics.
Low melting range is the property that matters most in certain applications. Heat input is what damages surrounding material, and a filler that flows at a lower temperature allows a joint to be completed with less heat reaching adjacent components, seals, and previously made joints.
That is valuable when brazing close to a valve with internal seals, near an existing joint that could be disturbed, or on thin wall material that would be damaged by prolonged heating.
Free flow is the other property, and it fills joints readily including those with imperfect fit up.
The cost is high, which confines these alloys to joints that require them.
Flux residue removal deserves emphasis on high silver work. Brazing fluxes are corrosive, and residue left on a joint attacks it over time. On a refrigerant line that corrosion eventually produces a leak, and the leak is at a joint that was made correctly in every other respect.
Residue is removed by washing with hot water while the joint is still warm, or by mechanical means once cool.
Confirm the alloy and flux suit the metals being joined, and remove all flux residue after brazing.
