Description

The Lucas-Milhaupt 98100 is a flux coated 45 percent silver brazing alloy rod.

Flux coated rods carry the flux as a coating on the rod itself, which is applied to the joint as the rod is fed in.

The convenience is real. Separate flux has to be mixed if supplied as a powder, applied to both surfaces before assembly, and the container has to be carried and kept clean. A coated rod removes all of that, and on a service call where a single joint needs making it is considerably quicker.

The limitation is that flux applied from the rod reaches the joint as the filler does, whereas flux applied to the surfaces before assembly is present from the start of heating. Flux works by dissolving oxide as the joint heats, and having it present throughout the heating cycle is more effective on joints that take time to reach temperature.

For that reason coated rods suit smaller joints that heat quickly, while larger joints benefit from separately applied flux, and some work uses both.

Flux coating is also fragile. Rods with the coating chipped or knocked off in transit provide flux unevenly, and coated rods should be stored so the coating is protected.

Flux residue must be removed after brazing, since brazing fluxes are corrosive.

Confirm the alloy and flux type suit the metals being joined, and clean residue thoroughly.
