The Gentec GTC27-GC300 is a ground clamp rated at 300 amp, in steel, model number 123010101.

The ground clamp — properly the work clamp — is the most neglected component of a welding circuit and one of the most consequential. Welding current is a complete circuit: it leaves the machine, passes through the electrode, crosses the arc, travels through the workpiece, and returns through this clamp. Everything that happens at the arc depends on that return path being solid.

When it is not, the symptoms are blamed on everything else. A poor work clamp connection adds resistance, and resistance in a welding circuit means voltage drop and heat. The welder sees an arc that will not strike cleanly, wanders, or fluctuates, and they chase it by adjusting the machine — while the actual fault is a clamp with a corroded jaw sitting on mill scale.

The 300 amp rating is the specification to match to the machine, and it must meet or exceed the output being used. An undersized clamp in a circuit carrying more current than it is rated for heats up, which increases resistance, which produces more heat.
