The Flange Wizard FLWMSB201 is a switchable magnetic block, fitting straight edges and squares to serve as a cutting guide.

The switchable magnet is the entire feature and it solves a problem that permanent magnets create. A permanently magnetic block holds a straight edge to a steel plate perfectly well — and then has to be pried off, which on a heavy magnet is a genuine struggle and frequently ends with the straight edge moved. A switchable block turns the magnetic field on and off with a lever. It holds when it is on and lifts away freely when it is off.

The application is straightforward: torch cutting a straight line freehand produces a wandering cut, so the operator clamps a straight edge to the work and runs the torch against it. Clamps need an edge to reach around, and in the middle of a large plate there is no edge. A magnetic block clamps anywhere on the surface.

The blocks also hold squares, which extends the same principle to marking and cutting at angles.

Note that this is the single block. Guiding a straight edge properly requires two — one at each end — which is why the MSB202 two-block set exists and why the Flange Wizard burning guide cases include a pair rather than one.
