The FAMCO UEVD4WH is a 4 inch under eave soffit vent in white, for terminating exhaust ductwork through a soffit.

Four inch soffit terminations most commonly serve bathroom exhaust fans, where the fan sits in the ceiling below and the soffit is the closest exterior surface.

The short duct run this permits is a genuine advantage. Bathroom fans have limited static pressure capability, and delivered airflow falls steeply with duct length, flexible duct, and elbows. A fan connected by a short run of rigid duct to a nearby termination will move something close to its rated airflow; the same fan on a long flexible run to a distant termination may move less than half of it.

Against that, discharging into a vented soffit delivers moisture directly into the attic, where it condenses on the cold roof deck and causes frost, staining, and eventual decay. Where the soffit carries attic intake ventilation, the exhaust must terminate clear of it, and where the soffit is continuously vented a different route is generally required.

The correct approach is to establish the attic ventilation arrangement before selecting the termination route, rather than after.
